Goodbye Jr. Rod - Last journey

Julio Hilario Purificacao Rodrigues popularly known as Jr. Rod, an excellent lyricist and composer left for his heavenly abode on 20th June 2016 at Goa Medical College after a brief illness. He was born to famed tiatrist of yesteryears late Minguel Rodrigues (Minguel Rod) and Rita Maria Rodrigues on 14th January, 1949 (or 1947 as per obit ad) at Cortalim.

When he was only 8 years old, inspired by his father’s popularity in singing and acting on the stage, Jr. Rod was captivated to emulate him. Taking a cue from his late father Minguel Rod, who was a master composer, Jr. Rod composed and penned down many meaningful songs of good morale. Like his father, his lyrics and compositions too were of educative in nature and always carried a good message. He was one of the most powerful singers to don the Konkani stage.  He has got a number of Cassettes and CD Albums to his credit. His first cassette was named ‘KID-YOUNG-ROD’ on the famous Trio of yesteryears comprising of Kid Boxer, Young Menezes and his legendary father Minguel Rod and the last CD was ‘DEVACHO UGDASS YETOLO’.

He first stepped on the stage in a concert held at Sancoale wherein he sang a song in Portuguese and received a big applause from the audience. It was from this day onwards his late father Minguel Rod started giving him roles in his tiatrs. Other well-known tiatr directors who saw the talent in this young boy, too gave him opportunities to act and sing in their tiatrs.

Jr. Rod went on to act and sing in the tiatrs of all the well-known directors of the tiatr stage like Souza Ferrao, Jacint Vaz, C. Alvares, Prem Kumar, Aristides and Lucian Dias, John Claro, Alfred Rose, Kamat de Asolna, Mendes Brothers, Tony Sax, M. Dod, Fr. Freddy J. da Costa, Champion Peter, Greg-Sabina, M. Boyer, Conception-Nelson-Anthony, H. Britton, Rom Tony, Pal Soares, Jose Rod, D’Lima, Ligorio Fernandes, Menino de Bandar, Christopher, Mariano Fernandes, Comedian Domnic, etc.

Besides directing several famous tiatrs of his late father Minguel Rod, Jr. Rod wrote and directed his own tiatrs namely ‘Paichi Girestkai’, ‘Pain Vibaddlem Putan Samball’llem’, ‘Ruzar Manxekar’, ‘Hench Tem’, etc. He was a member of famous Trio ‘Rom-Rem-Rod’ comprising of Rom Tony, Remmie Fernandes and himself. He has also to his credit a lot of duets with Josephine and Felcy.

Jr. Rod was the recipient of Gulab Magazine’s Best Singer Award in 2009, Goa Kala Gaurav Puraskar and Tiatr Academy’s Lifetime Contribution to Tiatr Award in 2012 for his valuable contribution towards the tiatr stage.

On behalf of all the tiatr fraternity and tiatr lovers, Tiatr Academy of Goa condoles the death of this great personality and express heart felt sympathies to his bereaved family and prays that the Almighty may give his soul eternal peace.
